Bluefish

Five-pound bluefish caught in the Chesapeake Bay off of Maryland's Eastern Shore

Bluefish are usually caught in the Chesapeake Bay from June through October. Pound for pound, these fish put on the best fight among the different fish that we catch in the Bay. In addition to the Chesapeake Bay, these fish are found as far north as Nova Scotia, and as far south as Argentina. They are also found in Africa and the Mediterranean region. They can be found just about anywhere in a tropical climate. Fishing for them is best when the weather is hot and the water is calm. Bluefish range from seven inches in length to as much as forty pounds. However, the ones that we catch in the Chesapeake Bay usually fall within the two to five pound range. They usually swim in schools of similar sized fish. We usually catch these fish by chumming with ground menhaden or trolling with spoons and tube lures. When trolling, it is not unusual to have every line hook up when going over a school. Contrary to popular belief, bluefish that range between two and five pounds are actually very good to eat, as long as they are iced down after being caught and eaten fresh.
